Since Greyhounds
are "sight hounds", keeping their vision in shape is important. Here's a
recipe we often use, which includes carrots as one of the ingredients.
Our Greyhounds love to snack on whole carrots too!
3 cups flour
1 cup corn meal
(1 additional cup of flour, corn flour or oatmeal can be
substituted)
1 cup
vegetable, beef or chicken broth
1 cup carrots,
finely chopped in a food processor
1/4 cup milk
1/4 cup
vegetable or olive oil
1 egg
optional:
Dissolve 3 to 4 Glucosamine capsules in the cup of broth (heated).
Glucosamine aids in the strengthening of joints and is found in many
good quality "large breed" and "senior" formula dog foods. You can
find the capsules in the vitamin section of most stores.
Mix the broth,
carrots, milk, oil, and egg. The add the flour and corn meal and kneed
the dough into a ball. Tip: If the dough is too thick, add a little more
water, to sticky, add a more flour. Pre-heat oven to 350ºF. Roll out
dough onto a flat surface and cut with cookie cutters or cut the dough
into strips or shape of your choice. For soft-centered treats, roll onto
2 to 3 inch round balls (this is great for dogs with missing teeth).
Place pieces ungreased cookie sheets and bake at 350ºF for about 30
minutes. Since these treats have no preservatives, make sure to use them
within a week or refrigerate them.
We hope your dogs enjoy these treats as much as
ours do!
